Historic Past:
Built in 1898 in an Irish Shipyard according to Scottish naval architect William Fyfe drawings, the regatta cutter Pen Duick was one of the most beautiful sailing boats. She was abandoned after running aground in the muddy flats of the river la Loire. Guy Tabarly, the father of the famous sailor, Eric Tabarly, acquired the Pen Duick before World War II and sold it back to his son in 1952. Eric rescued and lovingly restored her until 1989 after putting all his savings and energy in this major restoration project. On June 14, 1998, the same year that Pen Duick reached it's one-hundredth birthday, Eric Tabarly and the other sailors aboard the Pen Duick were lost off the southeast coast of Wales on that stormy night. The body of Eric Tabarly was caught in a fishing net weeks after the tragedy.
